The Official Information Act 1982(external link) (OIA) helps citizens of Aotearoa New Zealand, permanent residents and anyone in New Zealand access information held by Government organisations and Ministers. This promotes openness and transparency and enables greater public participation in government.

Making a formal information request to Te Aka Whai Ora

If you are seeking information under the Official Information Act 1982 (OIA), your request should be as clear and specific as you can possibly make it.

If you make your request in person, we will we get contact details from you and confirm your request in writing to ensure we have captured correctly the information you are seeking.

You need to provide:

  • Your name
  • Your contact address (email or postal)
  • Details of the information you want
  • Details of the timeframes of the information you want.

You can specify the format you want the information presented in, for example by email or post, or in person.

We may contact you if we need to understand in more detail, what you are looking for.

If we are unable to provide it in the way you have requested, we will explain why, and you can make a complaint to the Office of the Ombudsman (external link)if you are not satisfied.

Official Information Act responses

Te Aka Whai Ora publishes selected responses to Official Information Act 1982 (OIA) requests.

Under the OIA, information should be made available unless there is a good reason to withhold it. We may only withhold information for specific reasons set out in the Act. If this happens, we will identify the relevant sections of the Act that apply.
